A black female soldier who fronted British Army recruitment campaigns has spoken for the first time about how years of racist abuse and bullying made her life whilst serving “a living hell”.

I am aghast and disgusted by this story of sustained disgraceful racist treatment: Army racism apology to black ‘poster girl’ soldier

This appalling racist bullying seems to have happened despite huge efforts from the top to make the armed forces more inclusive. It must be time to ask if we could promote equal treatment more directly, straightforwardly and effectively.

Over years in Parliament, I made in one way or another this – the classical liberal – case for equality many times (thread):

Today, Conservatives and all people of goodwill must rediscover that language of equality before the law, not after it, and engage with people where they are to make equal treatment and equality of opportunity real for everyone. Plainly, the current approach to “diversity, equity and inclusion” is a rank failure, one which seems to be sowing more problems than it solves.

It’s time to find a new approach based on the ideas in the thread above: zero tolerance of racism through insisting on equal treatment.
